This week’s Misfit Entrepreneur is Heidi Schalk.  Heidi is a business strategy and leadership coach, author, speaker and host of the Be S.H.E. Podcast (Be Seen. Be Heard. Be Empowered) who has been featured everywhere from FOX, ABC, NBC, CBS and The Daily Herald just to name a few.   She is also a former top finalist in body-building and fitness competition.

Heidi works with female entrepreneurs, giving them simple tools and strategies to confidently build successful, online businesses, on their own terms, so they can create their dream life for themselves and loved ones.

One of the unique things about Heidi is that her process is designed to help her clients reach 6-figures in 6 months. So, I asked her to come up and share her process as well as her wisdom gained from year of experience helping people succeed in business.

Show Notes

Heidi’s entrepreneurial journey came out of the blue.   It was something new to her. It came from her going through a divorce about five years ago. She found herself at the mediation table moving through the divorce and wondering what she was going to do going forward because she had been a stay-at-home mom to that point.  Her kids were young, a son four, and daughter, six.

She wanted to keep as much the same as she could, but was scared because she had to find a way to bring in income.  She found coaching on Facebook and focused on doing what “she knew.”  She ultimately focused on transformational coaching, because that's what she was doing, transforming her life from one space to another. She got clear on what her vision was, her why, and what she really wanted for her and her children.  She started helping women with their goals and creating their goals and achieving their goals. Over the next few years, she moved into the business side.

“That's one thing I share with my clients.  Don't stay stuck in where you are right now. Just take action and your business will evolve because you're evolving as you're growing.”

From all your work with clients, what do you find is the biggest challenge that most have to overcome? And how can they overcome it?
  • We get in our own way because we are in balance.
  • Balance is a big struggle for women in business because we're juggling many hats. Many of us have, we're in relationships. We have a partner, we have a family, we have kids. We're also, you know, a sister, a daughter.
  • Women take on a lot of responsibilities and we try and do it all. A lot of women lone wolf it.
  • Mindset is one of the biggest pieces. You give people all the tools and the strategies, but if they don't get clear in their mind, then they can't get clear in their heart.
  • That's where we want them to lead from is their heart, but we get so stuck in our heads that the fear holds us back, perfectionism holds us back, etc.
  • It's not talent. It's typically mindset and marketing.

How does somebody separate the head from the heart and know when to use the head versus the heart? And what should people do to build the right mindset.?
  • When you feel stuck, when you don't know what the next thing is, when that fear creeps up and you're scared to take that next step into getting into your next cut, then lead with your heart, lean into serving.  How can I help one person today? When we're leaning into helping someone and focused out, that's when we get out of our head, and that's actually where the creativity will start flowing and the clarity of what your next step is.
  • When we're stuck. We are focused on where we're at and what's going on with us. But when we can reach out and help one person, it opens so many new avenues for us.
  • As far as the mindset pieces, one is a practice of gratitude. Practice daily gratitude and write what you are grateful for in your life, but also write the things you are grateful for in the future like you already have them.

Is there any other skill set that you feel entrepreneurs really must have to succeed in today's world?
  • The courage to take action is a big one because action brings clarity. And the more action you're taking, the clearer you're going to get.
  • That can very scary for, especially for a new entrepreneur who's new to the game and doesn't know what to do, that just taking some form of action.
  • There's no mistakes, there's no failures. Everything is just a learning moment to keep moving forward.
  • Self-talk. How we talk to ourselves makes a big difference in our daily lives.  Are you telling a story of negativity?
  • Don’t use “I have to or I need to” use “I get to.”  For example, you don’t “have to answer email.”  You “get to answer email.”  What a difference this makes.

How do you take clients to Six Figures in six months?
  • It’s called the MONEY System.
  • The M stands for marketing because many entrepreneurs, when they have a problem or they're struggling with bringing in clients and revenue, it's not a talent issue.  Focus on the key steps in marketing, how to market your services, your products, and yourself in order to draw in their ideal clients.
  • The O stands for offer. You must create an irresistible offer. Stay focused one offer to start.  More offers mean more confusion to buyers.
  • The N stands for networking which is collaboration, connection, community.
  • E is for the enrollment, which is the sales portion. It's really important that we get comfortable with making an offer and in asking for the business - understanding your value and your worth and charging that for your business.
  • Y stands for You, which is showing up authentically, creating your blue ocean.

At the 22:30 mark, Heidi gives an example of a client and how she used the MONEY system to help them.
Tips and tricks around growing a brand visibility online that people can take and start using today?
  • Focus on visibility and be consistent how you show it.
  • It will take time to get traction, but that only comes with daily effort.
  • Build your list outside of social and other platforms so you have access to your audience directly.

Best ways to overcome fear so people can step forward and reach their true potential?
  • The biggest mistake people make is not carving their niche out in their small group of people in the world and putting their stake in the ground.
  • Don’t try to be the solution for everyone.
  • Focus on that small group that you can make a difference for and work each day for them with what you share in your content, how you market, and how you show up.
  • Broader is broke, nitcher is richer.
  • Once you find your niche, it is easier to overcome fear as you are not trying to please everyone out there.
  • If you're really connected to that why that drives you, the why that makes you cry, that's what's going to keep you propelling forward.

There's single parents that'll watch or listen to this show, what can you share about how to succeed as a single parent entrepreneur?
  • It's structure. If it's not on the calendar, it's probably not going to get done.
  • Creating structure and planning your days and week’s helps you to keep up with all the needs of being a single parent, your work, etc.
  • Make it OK for your family to be part of your business.

What are some of the best lessons that you learned from your experience as a bodybuilder that you feel translate well to entrepreneurship and building a business?
  • It’s incredibly competitive.  You have to give 100% all the time and that can take a toll.
  • Have grace, be willing to forgive yourself.
  • Do the best you can all every day.
  • Take time to review what is working and what is not.
  • Celebrating the wins along the way is a big thing.
  • To compete at the highest level also forces you to be highly structure.
