Dave Lukas - Lessons for Hannah405: Lessons For Hannah - Desire
Hello Misfit Nation! Welcome to another edition of "Lessons for Hannah!" Many years ago, I introduced a new format that alongside our regular episodes called “Lessons for Hannah.” Hannah is my daughter and one of the main inspirations for the Misfit Entrepreneur. I wanted to have a place where she could go and learn from her daddy and his Misfit friends throughout her life….even after I am gone. If you haven’t listened to the first episode of "Lessons for Hannah," I urge you to as it gives some more background and tells the amazing story of how Hannah came to be in our lives. Lessons for Hannah are short, very useful, and sometimes comical lessons, that I want to share with you and give to Hannah to help in your lives. Because I want Hannah to have these for her life, I’m going to speak as though I am talking directly to her. These episodes are a lot of fun and if you think there is a lesson that we should include in these episodes, please don’t hesitate to send it over to us at [email protected]. We’d love to share it. This week’s Lesson for Hannah Hannah, I want to talk to you about secret of the most successful and of those that reach their potential. It is a secret that has been around since the beginning of mankind all the way back through the Bible. In fact, Napoleon Hill in his famous book, Think and Grow Rich references that secret is throughout the pages of the book for the reader. I have read that book several times and while many people try to make the answer complex, the secret is really quite simple and straightforward. So, what is it? What is it that propels people to success where others don’t and reach their true potential and capability? It is one word: Desire. Those that have a burning desire to reach their goals or succeed will do so. Put another way, if you truly want something bad enough you will get it. You will do everything possible, make all the sacrifices necessary, and never quit if your desire is big enough. The hard and sad truth about our world today is that very few people have or find a burning desire for something. Most people go through life with their breaks on living in a state of what they believe is comfort, but in reality, it is just settling for less than can or should be. But there are countless example for us to learn from to help ignite our desire for success in life. One of the most famous is Thomas Edison. Thomas Edison as one of the greatest inventors in history, known for his many inventions, including the phonograph, motion picture camera, and most famously, the electric light bulb. But many don’t know that Edison didn't invent the light bulb on his first try. He didn’t on his second try either. In fact, he failed over and over. It’s said that Edison tested over 1,000 different materials for the filament of the bulb failing over 10,000 tries before finding the right one which led to his famous quote on failure. He said, "I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work." Hannah, and everyone watching and listening, I just want you to think for minute. Is there anything in your life that you have desired or wanted to make a reality so bad that you failed 10,000 times to get it? How about 1000 times? 100? 50? Most people give up after just a few tries. But, not Edison and those like him with a burning desire to succeed. They keep going until it is done. And this is a great lesson in of itself. Anything that is truly worth it will have failure as part of the process and each failure is a step closer to success. Thomas Edison’s story has a number of other lessons as well.
You probably get the point now, but the next question in your head is most likely, “How do I find a desire and keep it going once I do?” Well, Napoleon Hill had a formula for that which he outlined as a combination of principles in the book. It goes like this:
Hannah, learning to tap into your ability for desire is one of the greatest lessons I can teach to help you in all areas of your life. Success often requires perseverance, learning from failures, creativity, and a strong desire to succeed. Edison’s story shows that even the greatest successes are built on a foundation of many small failures and constant effort, all driven by a deep desire to achieve one’s goals. As you go through life, do your best to apply these lessons and principles wherever you need them. And always remember, the harder it is, the more you are growing and the higher you will go. As Tom Hanks’ character in a League of Their Own, one of your favorite movies says, “It’s supposed to be hard. If it wasn't hard, everyone would do it. The hard is what makes it great.” I love you, Dad Best Quote
