402:  Beyond the Game, Success Lessons from a 30+ Year Entrepreneur Career with Brian Biro

This week’s Misfit Entrepreneur is Brian Biro.  Where to start with Brian.  He is ranked as one of the top motivational speakers in the world and Top 10 interactive speakers in the US.  He has delivered over 1900 presentations around the world over the last 34 years and is a best-selling author of 16 books.  If that’s not enough, he has been featured everywhere from Good Morning America to CNN and is a former professional swimming coach building teams ranked in the top 10 in nation.

His latest book is called Lessons from Legends which brings forth the championship formula for success from arguably two of the greatest coaches in history, John Wooden and Pat Summit.  The book provides a fresh perspective on leadership, team building, and excellence and how to take the lessons from the locker room to the board room.

I’m excited dig into all this with Brian and share his wisdom from a 30+ year entrepreneur career.

Show Notes

Brian, initially started as a U.S. swimming coach, focusing not just on the sport but on coaching the individuals.  He got an MBA at UCLA to transition out of sports and into a more balanced life and entered the corporate world, eventually becoming a vice president, where he spearheaded team-building programs that transformed company culture and performance.  He had a gift for inspiring others and helping them to perform at higher levels, so he left the corporate world to follow his passion for motivational speaking, feeling it was his true calling.

You’ve spoken almost 2000 times throughout the world over the last 3+ decades – what is it that you have learned about people and how to reach one’s potential.
  • Brian says he is a motivated speaker, not a motivational speaker, focusing on internal motivation.  It is the same for individuals, motivation comes from within.
  • We should focus on the simplicity in communication to foster memorable and impactful learning.
  • Successful people and entrepreneurs practice servant leadership and the value of being part of a team.
  • Leaders that succeed are fully present to build trust and validate the importance of individuals.

You have a unique way of delivering your talks in which you make the participants the star of the show.  Explain how you do that.
  • Brian does unique seminar activities like breaking boards to symbolize personal breakthroughs.  His focus is helping people understand how to break through their personal barriers and learn their true potential.
  • Everyone has personal challenges and they will have their own journey in overcoming them, but in order to do so, they must believe and understand what is possible for them and that motivates them to break through.
  • It is also important that people understand that reaching new levels is a team effort needing the support of those around you.

Let’s talk Lessons from Legends.  You actually spent time with John Wooden as a coach.  Tell us what that experience was like?
  • Brian reflects on the influence of John Wooden, emphasizing his humility, integrity, and lifelong learning.
  • He Compares the coaching styles and philosophies of John Wooden and Pat Summit, noting their shared values and different approaches.
  • He shares John Wooden's "Pyramid of Success," a critical framework illustrating his method for achieving competitive greatness, which Wooden defines not as beating others but as being the best one is capable of becoming.
  • While Wooden was more quiet in his approach, Pat Summit was known for her intense and no-nonsense approach to coaching.  Both coaches, despite their different styles, shared core values such as humility, a relentless work ethic, and a commitment to improving continuously.
  • Both Wooden and Summit excelled in adapting their strategies and philosophies over time. They focused on personal responsibility and constant self-evaluation, which allowed them to make minor but significant adjustments that were key to their teams' successes. This is an important lesson and skill for leaders.
  • Great leadership is about asking the right questions rather than always providing answers, thereby fostering a culture of engagement and independent thinking among team members.
  • It is important to understand and use discipline as a teaching tool rather than a form of punishment.  Creating a blame-free environment helps team members to take risks and innovate without fear of retribution.

What are some key leadership lessons you've learned?
  • Ask questions rather than always providing answers to foster a proactive team environment.
  • It is important for leaders to exemplify energy and purpose to inspire and engage teams.
  • It is critical to have adaptability in leadership, especially in response to changing industry conditions.

Talk to us about your entrepreneur journey.  What do you attribute to such a long and consistent career in speaking and writing
  • Love what you do and consistently vocalize this passion.
  • Being adaptable by adjusting content and presentation styles to fit shorter, more impactful formats as things have changed over time.
  • Tailoring presentations to specific audiences, keeping each event fresh and relevant.

Misfit Entrepreneurs!  I want to tell you about an incredible resource that will have tremendous impact on your business and your revenue.  I have used this solution in multiple businesses and it has made an incredible difference!  Let me start by asking you something.  “Do you know how much it costs your business when just one salesperson doesn’t step up to deliver?  Do you really know?”   The cost can easily exceed six figures for just one bad hire – not just from the time, effort, and resources in hiring, but from the lost business and downtime as well.  And the last thing any growing business can afford is to have a failed hire, especially in sales, the revenue driver for the company.

But what if there was a way to know someone checked all the boxes of a great sales hunter and closer before you ever hired them?  That’s the solution I’ve found from a company called SalesDrive.  They have created a solution called DriveTest®. A powerful hiring tool that separates high-performance salespeople from pretenders by measuring the most critical personality trait needed for success in sales: Drive.

Drive is composed of three non-teachable traits shared by all top producers: Need for Achievement, Competitiveness, and Optimism.  And knowing who has Drive before the interview dramatically increases your chances of selecting salespeople who will produce for you, while avoiding those costly bad hires.  I’ve used the solution and it works.  In fact, it works so well, I have referred them to every company I work with.

And they created a special offer so you can use them as well, for FREE.  You can Get a free DriveTest® assessment today at www.MisfitEntrepreneur/SalesDrive
