Show Notes

Ruben has always connected with the idea of thinking differently.  Ruben’s origin story started with music.  He started to explore music as a young kid going from Mozart to eventually punk rock.  He learned how much math was behind things in this world, including music, but it was the art of being created that really made a difference.  Because of this, he got into tech in the 90’s and his first startup was in 1998 as a video tech startup.  Since then, he has connected with the idea that people want to be unique, they want to stand out from the crowd, and he had helped them with his business to do so.

The way we all communicate has changed dramatically in just a few years.  Where do you see the state of communication today and where do you think we are going in this area?
  • The biggest problem we are dealing with right now is trust and building trust.
  • This is OK, but very important to understand and is something that must be overcome.
  • It forces us to be more creative and authentic to succeed.
  • Communication is effectively unlimited and never ending.

At the 10 min mark, we talk about the challenge of having unlimited communication and the constant bombardment of it.
  • Empathy is needed now, more than ever in communication.
  • Ask yourself next time you send something for sales/market, “How would I respond to this if it was send to me?”

Why is video such a powerful way to connect?
  • It is isn’t so much survival of the fittest any more.  Not being the most alpha.
  • Its about being adaptable, agile, and most nimble.
  • In video, be the person another person wants to hang out with.
  • Be the person who has empathy and understanding – show you understand people’s challenges and pain.
  • Those who exemplify trust and understanding are successful in video and it is very powerful allowing people to connect in deeper ways.

How do you use video to truly build trust?  Is there a set of principles you can share?
  • #1 – most correspondence for sales is ignored.  You have to punch through the noise.
  • You have to build rapport.  You can do this by recording a video showing the world of your business and how it relates the their world.
  • #2 – you need to build value.  You can do this by showing a problem that you know they have and how you can fix it.  For example, a quick review of their website with a few pointers on how they can make it better.
  • When a prospect sees that you can bring them real value, they are more open to working with you.
  • #3 – once you have built rapport and show proof that you can help them, you can invite them to talk and see if there is an opportunity to work together.
  • You can also leverage the content from the work you do in the process to put on your YouTube, blog, etc.
  • It takes work to do this right.

At the 29 min mark, Ruben talks about a scarcity mindset vs. a growth mindset.
  • There are always a lot of reason you can come up why you can’t.  But, it only takes one reason why you can.
  • Beware the hustle/grind mentality.
  • The growth mindset is investing in the long-term.

Anything else we should know about video marketing?
  • Every video opportunity is an opportunity to create content to fuel your long tail marketing.
  • Record everything.
  • Mine your content and use it.
  • Every business has FAQs – the most common questions you get on your business.  There are the Top 10, but research shows there is 250.  Take the time to record a video for the 250 and put it on your YouTube channel answering each one.  This is a great way to build trust and social proof.
  • Look at your data and be data oriented.  Look at the data for your videos and what they are resonating with.

What should we know about how to tell a great story?
  • Storytelling is one of the earliest forms of communication for mankind.
  • There is a hero arc.  The Hero’s journey.
  • But, if we set the other person up as the hero in the journey, it has a much bigger impact because it is about them and not you.

Top entrepreneur lessons from your journey?
  • People are not honest.
  • Entrepreneurship is about listening, but also not listening and ignoring some information.
  • There is only one way you can validate if your idea is good:  Is someone willing to pay for it and continues to pay for it.
  • You don’t need to build something in order to sell it.  You start with knowledge and get the validation.
  • You must solve the runway issue…don’t die on the runway with your business.

Legacy is very important but has nothing to do with money.  Legacy comes from imparting wisdom, creating things, and impacting the world.

Talking is about listening.  You can say 2 minutes of information or 20 minutes.  What if you let someone speak   for 18 mins and then spoke for 2?
