Show Notes

Rupal's journey is a testament to the power of embracing one's unique path. Growing up in a high-performance family where traditional career paths like doctors, lawyers, and bankers were the norm, she always felt like a misfit. Instead of following the expected route, she pursued her interest in political science, which led her to a master's in international affairs. An unexpected invitation from the CIA to apply for a position marked the beginning of an incredible adventure. With her multilingual skills, overseas experience, and a penchant for saying yes to unconventional opportunities, she thrived at the CIA. Her career transition to entrepreneurship was driven by a desire to explore new challenges, leading her to business school in London and eventually to building her businesses and sharing her unique insights with the world.

What made you transition from the CIA to entrepreneurship?
  • Approaching 30, Rupal felt an urgency to explore opportunities outside the CIA before it felt too late. She believed that if she didn’t transition soon, she might become less marketable outside the CIA, a notion she later realized was unfounded.
  • Rupal focused on her desire to live in London. Business school appeared to be a perfect bridge, leading her to attend London Business School. This move allowed her to transition smoothly into the world of entrepreneurship.

What did you learn at the CIA about improving your mind that helps you as an entrepreneur?
  • Working in volatile environments taught Rupal the importance of recognizing what is outside her control. This fosters resilience and adaptability, crucial traits for any entrepreneur.
  • The CIA environment instilled a belief that with the right mindset and resources, anything is possible. It’s the same in entrepreneurship.

How do you coach others on mindset and mental strength?
  • Take control over curating inputs—focusing on constructive influences while filtering out distractions. This approach helps maintain focus and clarity.
  • Rupal talks about challenging negative self-beliefs with objective data. For example, if someone doubts their capability, she advises listing evidence for and against this belief to gain a balanced perspective.

How do you start applying these strategies daily?
  • Regularly assess the impact of the people and information in your life. Are they helping you move forward or holding you back? Adjust accordingly.
  • Engage in self-assessment exercises, like journaling about achievements and challenges, helps identify and reframe limiting beliefs. This practice builds a stronger, more resilient mindset.

What are some leadership lessons from your time at the CIA?
  • High-performing leaders are genuine and understand their strengths and weaknesses. They seek input from others and are not afraid to show vulnerability, fostering trust and collaboration.
  • Effective leaders make and own their decisions, understanding the importance of responsibility. Rupal shared an example of a chief of station who empowered his team, demonstrating trust and decisiveness in action.

How do leaders balance politics and authenticity?
  • Leaders must decide how much to engage in politics based on their values and the trade-offs they are willing to accept. It’s essential to remain true to oneself while navigating the political landscape.
  • If the organizational culture doesn’t align with your values, consider finding or creating a context that does. Playing the game without compromising your integrity is crucial for long-term fulfillment.

Other advice?
  • Be open to being wrong.  Embrace mistakes as learning opportunities. Seeking constructive criticism keeps you agile and adaptable, essential traits in a rapidly changing business environment.
  • Maintaining an environment where feedback is valued and used for growth ensures continuous improvement and resilience.
