This week’s Misfit Entrepreneur is Cortney McDermott.  Cortney went from a struggling temp secretary to a bestselling author, TEDx speaker, and mind-body expert, with a Master of Science from the London School of Economics. Cortney's career includes being an executive at Vanity Fair, Vice President at Sustainability Partners Inc., and running her own businesses, with clients ranging from Google, to Universal Music Group, Nike, and Virgin Unite.

Her work in the field of self-development and business strategy has been featured in Inc., Women’s Health, SUCCESS, The Huffington Post, Fox News, and many other mainstream business and lifestyle media.

Courtney's had an interesting journey from a struggling temp secretary to success.  As she says, she lived many lifetimes in this life, and each phase had a connecting thread building on the next to her get to where she is. 

You have a focus in using brain-body science to unlock human potential.  Explain how this is done and give us some examples or exercises we can do to level up.
  • Courtney shares the significance of understanding brain-body science. She highlights the role of the Reticular Activating System (RAS), which filters information. For instance, she mentions that the RAS seeks answers to the questions we ask ourselves and discusses how it impacts our daily lives.
  • She talks about how much our brains and subconscious control our daily actions and when we understand this, we can start understand why we do what we do, but more importantly change things for the better and improve our responses from the RAS…training it.

I’ve seen where you say most of what people have been told about “self-help” is a myth and the solution is right in plain sight.  What is it?
  • Courtney challenges the common perceptions of self-help.
  • She encourages people to trust the intelligence guiding their lives, whether they call it God, the universe, or something else.
  • She goes on the point out that how we trust this intelligence for most things in our lives but often overlook it when it comes to self-help and instead seek outside remedies when we already have the best remedies at hand. 
  • When it comes to understanding your own programming and truly helping yourself, Courtney shared several great points.
  • She advises getting quiet and diminishing external noise as a way to recognize and change programming.
  • She also talks about the importance of moving physically to release stagnant energy and gain agency. She talks about the importance on the need to focus on where your attention is going and mentions that agency comes when individuals are still enough to realize they have it.
  • Trust your intelligence!  Cortney talks about the intelligence that governs everything, comparing it to how we trust the sun to rise every morning without questioning it.
  • She also shares that this intelligence is often overlooked but is right there in plain sight, governing everything from the movements of planets to the beating of our hearts.

If there was one thing or habit an entrepreneur could focus on developing that would make the most difference in their success – what would you say it is?
  • “Get quiet." The intention should be to connect with the intelligence discussed earlier and that it doesn't necessarily require a specific duration of time.
  • There is power in intention and connecting with the intelligence, even if it's just for a moment. The key is to set the intention to connect.

You recently spent time on Necker Island with Richard Branson – what was that experience like and what were your takeaways from your time there?
  • In some ways, it is magical.  It is transformative to see how Richard and people at that level think.
  • It was surprising to see Richard Branson's down-to-earth nature and his connection to his inner intelligence.
