Misfit Entrepreneur 15: Kelly Roach

Dave Lukas Chats with Jothy Rosenberg

401:  Who Says I Can't? Jothy Rosenberg’s Path from Survivor to Serial Entrepreneur

This week’s Misfit Entrepreneur is Jothy Rosenberg.  Jothy is a two-time cancer-surviving amputee, book author, and serial entrepreneur.  Over the course of his 35-year career, Jothy has built 9 startup companies in fields as diverse as supercomputing and cybersecurity and even a TV production company.  With two exits of over $100M, Jothy has shown how anyone can use their personal struggles to help them succeed at the highest levels.

His latest book, Think Like a Tech Founder: Anecdotes of an Incorrigible Entrepreneur,” shares hard-won wisdom, from over an 35 year + entrepreneurial journey distilled into essential lessons for founders and CEOs.

Jothy’s story of overcoming adversity to achieve great success is not just inspiring—it’s a roadmap for anyone who wants to reach their true potential and I’m excited to dig on everything with him.

Show Notes

At age 16, Jothy faced cancer, leading to the amputation of his leg, followed by the removal of a lung due to the cancer's spread. This set of circumstances gave him an intense self-driven push towards proving his capabilities against others' doubts.  Despite being told he couldn't engage in activities like skiing or swimming, he became an accomplished skier using specialized equipment and eventually excelled to skiing double black diamond slopes.  Post-cancer, Jothy decided to live life to its fullest as a ski bum in Alta, Utah, honing his skiing skills during a period when he believed his days were numbered.  His drive to prove what could be possible for himself propelled him into competitive swimming and cycling, participating in events like the Alcatraz Sharkfest swim and biking from Boston to New York.  Jothy's academic and entrepreneurial journey was similarly marked by overcoming obstacles; he completed his PhD in Computer Science, served as a professor, and later founded several companies inspired by challenges others deemed too difficult.

What is the number one thing your experience has taught you about life?
  • Anything is possible…
  • Jothy's experiences led him to adopt and trademark the mantra "Who says I can't?" which he uses as a rhetorical challenge against any perceived limitations.
  • His philosophy is not just personal but extends to how he perceives the drive necessary in entrepreneurship, sharing the parallels between overcoming physical disabilities and the challenges of starting and running a business.
  • He gave a TED Talk and authored books under the same title to inspire others, especially children, to challenge limitations and embrace potential opportunities.

Define grit. Talk to us about how to build that habit into our lives as entrepreneurs.
  • Gumption, tenacity, and resilience.  It's essential not just for entrepreneurs but for anyone engaging in extreme sports or overcoming significant challenges.
  • Grit involves setting goals, achieving them, and then setting higher goals, a process that builds resilience and determination.
  • For entrepreneurs, grit is often naturally present or quickly developed out of necessity as they face the continuous challenges of starting and growing a business.

How did you learn to overcome the self-doubt and the challenges of life?
  • It starts with small actions.  Jothy set modest goals initially, such as walking the dog daily on crutches, which gradually built his physical strength and confidence.
  • He shared a story about an early attempt at skiing post-amputation, using traditional ski poles, which was is almost impossible on one leg, but it taught him persistence through constant trial and error.
  • Learning to steer with his "little toe" symbolized overcoming the more intricate challenges he faced, and skiing efficiently became a metaphor for tackling other life and business challenges.
  • Success in one area, like skiing, provided a solid foundation of confidence that helped him face new challenges across different aspects of his life and career.

What are your most important lessons for entrepreneurs to thrive in their business?"
  • Mastering certain aspects can significantly increase the chances of success.
  • Key factors for a successful startup include:
    • Leadership: The CEO should initially be the person with the vision and passion for the problem being solved.
    • Product-Market Fit: Essential for any startup, this involves aligning the product effectively with market needs and expectations.
    • Capital: Raising money is crucial and challenging; it requires a clear understanding of how to attract investment.
    • Cash Management: Entrepreneurs must manage their cash flow diligently to avoid running out of funds.
    • Culture: Establishing a strong company culture early on is vital for attracting and retaining talent, and it plays a crucial role in long-term success.

What are some of those principles from your book that you share, and wisdom gained over 35 years?
  • The book consists of anecdotes that provide practical advice and lessons learned from Jothy's extensive career.
  • He discusses the nature of investor relationships, emphasizing that while investors can be supportive, their priorities may not always align with the entrepreneur's personal or business interests.
  • Jothy warns about "imposter syndrome" and talks the importance of role alignment, particularly in leadership positions where technical expertise and visionary capacity are crucial.
  • The book’s goal is to equip future entrepreneurs with insights to navigate the complexities of startup life effectively, emphasizing real-world challenges and strategic responses.

Avoid saying or thinking “Can't.” Beware of the impact of limiting beliefs and challenge the notion that something isn't possible.

Never be arrogant. A modest amount of insecurity can be beneficial as it drives you to strive for better, balancing insecurity with the pursuit of exceptionalism.

Strive for exceptionalism.   Set modest goals, work hard to achieve them, celebrating the successes extensively, and then move on to higher goals.  Doing this fosters a cycle of continuous improvement and success.
