351:  Redefining Success, How Meg Casebolt Created a 7-Figure Business by Working Less and Focusing on What Matters

This week’s Misfit Entrepreneur is Meg Casebolt.  Meg is the founder of Love at First Search, a unique firm focused on search marketing.

Meg started out as a marketing director for an architecture firm.  It didn’t take her long to realize the low pay combined with the unrealistically high expectations was not the life she wanted.  She started doing web design and SEO on the side and was able to leave starting her own business.  But, as she took maternity leave for the birth of one of her children, she found herself stressed trying to keep up with the marketing and social media promotion for her own business.  She took time off to re-evaluate, but much to her surprise, leads continued rolling in.

It was at this point that Meg realized how she could set up her business to market for her and cut her time in half while still producing 6-figures plus.

When I learned this about her, I had to ask her on the show.  I mean who wouldn’t want to implement strategies that drive new business to their business allowing them to cut their time down and focus on serving clients? I’m excited for Meg to share how businesses can do just this!

Show Notes

Meg says her path follows the path of many in a post-covid world.  She did the go to school, get good grades, get the job, etc.  And really realized that there is something better out there.  She didn’t start out wanting to be an entrepreneur, but doing the freelancing for her friend’s business opened her eyes to the incredible benefits and opportunities of entrepreneurship.

She found herself trying to do all things marketing, social media, etc.  She set up all her social media posting all the time everywhere and it was exhausting to keep up with.  It was getting engagement, but not getting clients.  When she was home on maternity leave, she found that she did not have the time to post for almost a whole summer.  And her business continued to get new clients by word of mouth and referrals.  Once she realized this, it changed everything and helped her to focus on what areas really grew her business.

SEO seems like such a blackbox.  What should we know and what are practical things entrepreneurs can do to take advantage of it.
  • SEO is search engine optimization which is a fancy way of optimizing your website to show up on google, YouTube, etc.
  • The key is empathy – understanding what you ideal client needs from you and ensure that it comes out in your words on your website.
  • If you are super clear on what problem you are solving and positioning yourself as an expert to solve the problem.
  • If you do this well, when people go looking for a solution to the problem, you will be there for them.

You teach a 3- month roadmap to get leads flowing from Google.  Take us through some of those steps.
  • If you have a website, there is a good chance you are showing up in some search results and getting traffic.
  • The first thing to do is go to Google Search Console.  This will tell you every single query and where your website shows up in search results.
  • Do an assessment of the terms you are getting found already on and maximize them.
  • Next, start having conversations with your clients and audience to see what words they are using when they search for services like yours.
  • Many times, the words people use are not what you think they are.
  • This will also help you understand the audience to focus on and real problems to solve.  Getting extremely specific is a good thing here.
  • In short, define WHO you want to be talking to, HOW you want to talk to them, and WHAT language is best to connect with them that they are using.

At the 14:30 mark, we discuss why niching down is a key to success in today’s world.

What are the best types of content to consistently drive leads?
  • The best type of the one your audience will consume.
  • Show up where your audience is and the way they want to hear from you.
  • If they engage and act from video content, then focus on video, etc.
  • But they key is also that you must be comfortable and able to be authentic in delivering the content.

How do you figure out which type of content is best?
  • Ask them!
  • Look at where you get the most engagement.
  • You don’t have to be everywhere.  Choose what you like and that your clients like to see in.
  • Try different things to test.

Is social media really worth putting the time into?
  • Looking at marketing metrics will help you decide.
  • If you enjoy and like engaging on social, then maybe that is your best medium.
  • If it is draining you and something you don’t look forward to, then focus elsewhere.
  • A better question is “What are you goals?”  Understanding the outcome will also help you decide where you need to focus your time.

How does a business owner make their website a sales machine?
  • Think of every piece of content created (blog, social, email, etc.) has a driving force back to an offer.
  • Don’t create content just for fun.  Make sure it leads back to your offer or call to action.
  • You should have calls to action and next steps on everything and everywhere people are seeing you.

Anything else around SEO/Content you feel is important?
  • Get yourself out of the mindset of creating something new all the time.
  • Focus on getting your customer journey right, but remember search values history, so work you have done in the past can carry SEO weight and help.
  • You can recycle content and bring it back to life.
  • You can also update what is already there in your business and help yourself.
  • Amplify what is working.

What is something that you wish you knew earlier in your entrepreneur career?
  • Thinking referrals were not good enough and playing small.
  • That you need to have a massive web presence and be everywhere.
  • You don’t have to be a household name to have massive success.

Any processes or habits that help you stay consistently successful?
  • Strategic planning every 90 days.
  • Identifying 2-3 top priorities every 90 days and focusing on them intently.

Best Quote

  • Define WHO you want to be talking to, HOW you want to talk to them, and WHAT language is best to connect with them that they are using.
