Dave Lukas - Lessons for Hannah350: Lessons For Hannah - The Incredible Power of Focus
Hello Misfit Nation! Welcome to another edition of "Lessons for Hannah!" Many years ago, I introduced a new format that alongside our regular episodes called “Lessons for Hannah.” Hannah is my daughter and one of the main inspirations for the Misfit Entrepreneur. I wanted to have a place where she could go and learn from her daddy and his Misfit friends throughout her life….even after I am gone. If you haven’t listened to the first episode of "Lessons for Hannah," I urge you to as it gives some more background and tells the amazing story of how Hannah came to be in our lives. Lessons for Hannah are short, very useful, and sometimes comical lessons, that I want to share with you and give to Hannah to help in your lives. Because I want Hannah to have these for her life, I’m going to speak as though I am talking directly to her. These episodes are a lot of fun and if you think there is a lesson that we should include in these episodes, please don’t hesitate to send it over to us at [email protected]. We’d love to share it. This week’s Lesson for Hannah Hannah, This is the 350th episode of the Misfit Entrepreneur. And it is only fitting that it be a Lessons for Hannah episode. And to make it even better, you were the inspiration for this lesson because you recently embodied it. Not too long ago, you had your first public performance singing in a talent show. It was beautiful. You were beautiful. And you were no doubt the best singer in the show. I’m not saying that just because I’m your dad. You know me well enough that if you hadn’t nailed it, I would be honest and let you know. But you did. What I found most exciting is that the performance was a culmination of many weeks of dedicated practice and intense focus. I watched as you worked with your voice coach every week and on every note you sang. You worked on every aspect of the song from beginning to end and made sure it was as perfect as you could make it. You were even working up to the minute before you went on stage. And because you had intense focus, your performance was fantastic. I hope you can see the lesson here. We live in a world of endless distractions and things pulling at our focus. Most people spend their time multi-tasking and working on many things at once. They get things done, but not near as good as they can or are as productive as they could be. Many times, we do just enough to get everything done. But this leads to mediocrity. The proverbial “jack of all trades and master of none.” But, when we set a goal with intense focus and determination, putting aside distractions, and giving everything we have to it, amazing things happen. We see this in action all the time across a number of examples, from great sports performances to performances on stage or on screen to seemingly impossible business successes. In fact, it is many of these events that we look up to and use as motivation. What most don’t see is all the hard work, intense focus, and almost obsessive dedication that goes into making these events a reality. It is precisely because the people that reach these achievements are focused and cut out everything else that keep them from reaching the goal that they have the success. You see, people are praised in public for what they ultimately have done in private. In this case, I got to see all of the work and dedication you did in private and knew because of that you would give a great performance. When you started out toward this goal, your voice was untrained and you could not hit very many, if any of the notes you needed to succeed. But after 6 weeks of focused work, you sounded like a pro. Hannah, as you go through life, you will have many distractions, and there will be times where it will be impossible not to multi-task or take on many things at once. But for the things that really matter. The major things that can move the needle and help you reach your dreams – approach them with the intense focus and desire that you did for this performance. You will accomplish things you never thought possible and reach levels others only dream of. I love you, Dad Best Quote
