Dave Lukas - Lessons for Hannah420: Lessons For Hannah - The Winner's Mindset
Hello Misfit Nation! Welcome to another edition of "Lessons for Hannah!" Many years ago, I introduced a new format that alongside our regular episodes called “Lessons for Hannah.” Hannah is my daughter and one of the main inspirations for the Misfit Entrepreneur. I wanted to have a place where she could go and learn from her daddy and his Misfit friends throughout her life….even after I am gone. If you haven’t listened to the first episode of "Lessons for Hannah," I urge you to as it gives some more background and tells the amazing story of how Hannah came to be in our lives. Lessons for Hannah are short, very useful, and sometimes comical lessons, that I want to share with you and give to Hannah to help in your lives. Because I want Hannah to have these for her life, I’m going to speak as though I am talking directly to her. These episodes are a lot of fun and if you think there is a lesson that we should include in these episodes, please don’t hesitate to send it over to us at [email protected]. We’d love to share it. This week’s Lesson for Hannah Hannah, I want to talk to you about something incredibly important: the winner's mindset. This is a mindset that can set you apart, help you overcome challenges, and ultimately lead you to success, not just in your career but in every aspect of life. When I started putting my thoughts together for this episode, I had jotted down a number of things, but then I started looking online for some inspiration on how to phrase them and for other thoughts that may be of use. I found myself listening to a popular and great speaking named, Eric Thomas and was amazed at how much the things I had written down aligned with many of his principles. I took some thoughts from him and combined things together. These principles are the foundation of a mindset that can help you achieve anything you set your mind to. Let's start with why you grind. In today’s world, many people work hard to be seen, to gain approval from others, especially on social media. But I want you to remember this: Stop grinding to be seen and start grinding to succeed. The effort you put in should be for you, not for the validation of others. Social media has made it easy to focus on the wrong things—like taking selfies or showing off luxury items. But these things don’t define success. Real success comes when you focus on documenting your growth, your learning, and your humanity. The world needs more of that, not more superficial displays. Next, let’s talk about the importance of falling in love with the process. I’ve talked about this before, but fall in love with the process, and the results will come. This is a crucial point that so many people overlook. True winners don’t just love the rewards—they love the work that gets them there. You see, passion is great, but it can be fleeting. What really sustains you is obsession—a deep, burning love for the process itself. When you’re obsessed, you don’t need motivation; the process itself is your motivation. You do it because you must, because it’s who you are. This is the difference between those who succeed and those who merely get by. The process, the daily grind, the little steps you take each day—that’s where the magic happens. Another key principle is about managing your time effectively. Often, we think we need more time to get things done, but the reality is, you don’t need more time—you need fewer distractions. We all have the same 24 hours in a day, but what separates the winners from everyone else is how they use those hours. Many people claim they’re busy, but often, they’re just glued to their phones, scrolling through social media or getting lost in meaningless activities. Imagine how much you could accomplish if you weren’t constantly distracted. Sometimes, it’s as simple as putting your phone down, or even throwing it against the wall, and focusing on what truly matters. When you eliminate distractions, you’ll find that you have all the time you need to create, to build, and to succeed. Hannah, there are 7.5 billion people in this world, and yet, we often let the opinion of just one person stop us from moving forward. Winners don’t let the opinion of one person derail their journey. Give yourself permission to ignore the gatekeepers, the middlemen, and the critics. You’re better than that. The only opinion that truly matters is your own and the people who genuinely care about you. Here is a principle from Eric that I really liked, “What some people call failure, I call the process of elimination.” Every time you face a setback, you’re not failing—you’re learning what doesn’t work so you can focus on what does. This is real learning, and it’s far more valuable than just reading or studying. It’s about doing, iterating, and growing through experience. There is so much truth in those statements. People love to make success seem complicated, often because they can charge you more for it. But the truth is, success is simple—it’s not easy, but it’s simple. It requires relentless, obsessive effort, but it’s not complicated. Don’t be fooled by those who try to make it seem more complex than it is. Focus on the basics, do them well, and repeat them consistently. And remember, it’s not just talent that gets you to the next level—it’s your energy. The energy you bring to your work, to your life, is infectious. It’s what draws others to you, what makes you stand out. Make sure you’re bringing positive, powerful energy into everything you do. You’ll face negativity and self-doubt along the way, but here’s the thing, don’t waste your energy on assumptions or self-doubt. Most of what you fear isn’t real—it’s just false evidence appearing real. And when others criticize you, remember this, do not take constructive criticism from people who have never constructed anything. I’m going to say that again, do not take constructive criticism from people who have never constructed anything. Focus on the builders, not the people who do nothing but tear things down. The world is full of people who will try to bring you down, but their opinions don’t matter. What matters is that you keep building, keep creating, and keep moving forward. Lastly, I’ve talked a lot about not letting others bother you or taking it personally. There is an exception. And that is that it is okay to take things personally if you’re going to use that energy to push yourself forward. A bad boss, a toxic ex, a former best friend—these can be powerful sources of motivation if you channel them correctly. And just as you wouldn’t eat junk food and expect to be in great health, don’t feed your mind junk and expect to be successful. Be mindful of what you consume—news, social media, negative influences—they can all affect your mindset. Feed your mind with positivity, knowledge, and inspiration. That is what winners do. Hannah, the winner’s mindset is about consistency, energy, and focus. It’s not always easy, but it’s incredibly rewarding. These principles can guide you, help you overcome obstacles, and lead you to success in whatever you choose to do. Remember, you have everything you need to be unstoppable, and I’m always here, cheering you on. I love you, Dad Best Quote
