Dave Lukas Chats with Dr. Tracy Gapin

448: Optimize Your Health, Maximize Your Wealth: Dr. Tracy Gapin on Peak Performance for Entrepreneurs

This week’s Misfit Entrepreneur is Dr. Tracy Gapin. If you’ve ever wondered how to truly optimize your health, performance, and longevity as a high-achieving entrepreneur, executive, or athlete—Tracy is the doctor you want to know.

He’s a board-certified urologist with over 25 years of experience who made a bold pivot from traditional medicine to founding the Gapin Institute—a premier performance health facility helping elite performers achieve more by mastering their biology.

Dr. Gapin is a trailblazer in the field of men’s health optimization, combining cutting-edge diagnostics, epigenetics, hormone therapy, and wearable tech to deliver personalized, measurable results. He’s the bestselling author of Male 2.0 and Codes of Longevity, a frequent speaker at top biohacking events like Dave Asprey’s Biohacking Conference, and has been featured in Entrepreneur Magazine and on NBC.

Tracy’s mission is to redefine what’s possible for men’s health—not just to live longer, but to live better, sharper, and more fulfilled at every stage of life. After going through my recent experience, I learned about how to further optimize my health and feel it’s very important to help you do the same and Tracy is the guy to do it

Show Notes

Tracy began his career as a board-certified urologist performing life-saving surgeries and treating prostate cancer. Despite his professional success, he found himself overweight, stressed, and feeling awful physically and mentally. A turning point came when he visited a doctor for the first time and was told to take a statin — a moment that made him realize how little traditional medicine did for true health optimization. Motivated to turn things around, Tracy studied functional and regenerative medicine, hormones, peptides, and longevity science. By applying what he learned, he drastically improved his own health and began implementing the same approach with his patients, seeing incredible results. Rediscovering his passion for medicine, Tracy made the move to leave a lucrative seven-figure surgical practice and launched the Gapin Institute. His institute now helps high-performing entrepreneurs, executives, and athletes achieve elite performance through precision health, and he is expanding his impact by teaching other physicians to do the same.

What does “Healthspan equals Wealthspan” mean?
  • Entrepreneurs often overlook how deeply their health affects their wealth.
  • Examples like Paul Allen and Steve Jobs show that money can't buy more time if health is neglected.
  • Health can either be your greatest asset or your biggest liability.
  • Many high-achievers are "problem unaware," thinking they’re fine because their doctor said they’re “normal.”
  • Cognitive function, decision-making, and daily performance are all affected by hidden health issues.

What are the most common health mistakes or blind spots among high achievers?
  • Believing they’re fine without getting proper testing.
  • Relying on basic physicals that don’t go deep into hormone, inflammation, or blood sugar metrics.
  • Common deficiencies: low testosterone, thyroid, DHEA, vitamin D, nitric oxide, and growth hormone.
  • Misinterpreting "normal" lab ranges — optimal levels are much higher than averages, which have declined over decades.
  • Sleep quality and stress-induced blood sugar problems are major, often ignored, health disruptors.

What does a great health routine look like for entrepreneurs?
  • Start with testing — don’t guess. Focus on five areas:
    1. Hormones
    2. Cardiovascular health
    3. Blood sugar
    4. Inflammation
    5. Nutrients
  • Use the “3 Rocks” approach to prioritize the top three focus areas for the quarter.
  • Avoid one-size-fits-all advice; personalize based on genetics, microbiome, sleep, and lifestyle.
  • Basic pre-bed routine for everyone: meditate, read, journal, sauna, and sex.
  • Social media advice often misses the nuance of individual needs.

Is this testing hard or expensive to get?
  • You can invest anywhere from a few hundred to thousands, but basic comprehensive bloodwork is a great start.
  • Gapin Institute provides tailored testing, unlike standard doctors who often order the wrong labs.
  • Most standard physicals don’t test things like free testosterone or hormone optimization markers.
  • Labs use outdated reference ranges, masking real issues due to declining population averages.
  • U.S. doctors are often 17 years behind the science in this area.

What is something simple anyone can start doing today to improve performance?
  • Sleep: Most critical element. It’s when your body repairs and rebuilds.
    • Count backward from wake time to plan bedtime.
    • Use wearables (like Oura) to track deep and REM sleep.
    • Avoid alcohol before bed — it destroys sleep quality.
  • Tiny Habits: Use BJ Fogg’s method to build habits through small, consistent daily actions.
    • Example: “Pee, two pushups” — build micro-habits that can scale.
    • Willpower alone doesn’t sustain habits — build discipline through structure.

What are key takeaways from Male 2.0 and Codes of Longevity?
  • Male 2.0 addresses how traditional men’s health is failing — testosterone is declining, obesity is rising.
  • Advocates for a proactive, personalized, precision-based health model using data and wearable tech.
  • Health metrics should be tracked like business KPIs.
  • Codes of Longevity emphasizes individualized epigenetic protocols for long-term performance.

What parallels do you see between elite athletes and successful entrepreneurs?
  • Elite athletes use systems, routines, and track metrics — entrepreneurs should do the same.
  • Tracy’s institute follows similar SOPs, systems, and EOS principles to drive consistency and scale.
  • Performance tracking and structure are key in both arenas.

If you could teach one business principle to the next generation, what would it be?
  • Focus on your unique ability and build your business around your passion and purpose.
  • Avoid distractions from “shiny objects.”
  • Passion-driven businesses attract aligned clients, team members, and partners.

What would you do differently if you had to start over?
  • Don’t get caught in the “how.” Focus on finding the who to help you execute.
  • Speed matters — launch, test, and refine.
  • Focus on transformation, not just deliverables.
  • Be crystal clear about the problem you solve for your ideal customer.

Best Quote

  • Your health can be your greatest asset or your biggest liability—depending entirely on what you choose to do about it.

Prioritize Your Health.  Your health is either your biggest asset or liability. Get tested, find blind spots early, and address them before it’s too late.

Picture
Know Your Why and Follow Your Passion.  Pursuing money alone leads to burnout and unfulfillment. Find your purpose, and success will follow.

Build Around Core Values and Culture.  Hire and surround yourself with people who align with your values. You can train skills, but not character.

Misfit Entrepreneurs!

I want to tell you about an incredible resource that will have tremendous impact on your business and your revenue.  I have used this solution in multiple businesses and it has made an incredible difference!  Let me start by asking you something.  “Do you know how much it costs your business when just one salesperson doesn’t step up to deliver?  Do you really know?”   The cost can easily exceed six figures for just one bad hire – not just from the time, effort, and resources in hiring, but from the lost business and downtime as well.  And the last thing any growing business can afford is to have a failed hire, especially in sales, the revenue driver for the company.

But, what if there was a way to know someone checked all the boxes of a great sales hunter and closer before you ever hired them?  That’s the solution I’ve found from a company called SalesDrive.  They have created a solution called DriveTest®. A powerful hiring tool that separates high-performance salespeople from pretenders by measuring the most critical personality trait needed for success in sales: Drive.

Drive is composed of three non-teachable traits shared by all top producers: Need for Achievement, Competitiveness, and Optimism.  And knowing who has Drive before the interview dramatically increases your chances of selecting salespeople who will produce for you, while avoiding those costly bad hires.  I’ve used the solution and it works.  In fact, it works so well, I have referred them to every company I work with.

And they created a special offer so you can use them as well, for FREE.  You can Get a free DriveTest® assessment today at www.MisfitEntrepreneur/SalesDrive
