453:  The ADHD Advantage, Skye Waterson on How to Build Better Businesses With Neurodivergent Strengths

This week’s Misfit Entrepreneur is Skye Waterson. If you’ve ever struggled with traditional productivity systems or felt like your brain just doesn’t fit the mold, Skye’s story and work will be a game-changer. She’s the founder of Unconventional Organisation, an ADHD support and coaching service designed to help entrepreneurs and executives build focused, sustainable success—without burnout.

Diagnosed with ADHD while completing her PhD, Skye realized that the usual productivity advice wasn’t built for minds like hers. So she created her own framework—one that now powers the systems used by over 82,000 professionals who follow her work. Her podcast The ADHD Skills Lab has over 200,000 downloads, and her web articles have reached more than a quarter million readers.

Skye’s belief is that ADHD isn’t a flaw to overcome—it’s a different operating system that, when properly supported, can be a massive asset. And through her work with founders, executives, and creatives, she’s helping people rewire their approach to focus, consistency, and scale.

Show Notes

Skye always believed she was headed down the academic path, pursuing a Master’s and then starting her PhD. But she found herself caught in a cycle of burnout—periods of intense work followed by creative retreats to recover. While working on her PhD, she was also building a business with her then-boyfriend (now husband). During this time, she noticed her productivity was inconsistent—some days producing excellent work, others leaving professors confused. At the suggestion of her university’s Inclusive Learning Center, she got tested and diagnosed with ADHD. This revelation sent her down a path of learning everything she could about ADHD, leveraging her academic training to study the research. Writing became her way to process and share what she was learning, eventually becoming the foundation for Unconventional Organization, which helps entrepreneurs and executives with ADHD build focus, consistency, and sustainable success.

What does true ADHD look like for an entrepreneur, and how can you recognize it? What does neurodivergent mean?
  • ADHD symptoms are persistent and pervasive across many areas of life (not just occasional distraction).
  • Entrepreneurs often have ADHD, as their tendency to go their own way aligns with ADHD strengths.
  • Neurodivergent refers to brains that operate differently (e.g., ADHD, autism), while neurotypical refers to those without such conditions.

If I suspect I have ADHD and I’m struggling, what’s the first thing I should do?
  • Stop repeating the same failed approaches—change your systems.
  • Determine if the problem is not knowing what to do (overwhelm) or not wanting to do it (dopamine struggle).
  • Work to identify which of those two categories your challenges fall into, as they require different solutions.

What are the most common productivity myths that don’t work for ADHD brains?
  • “Just start, you’ll feel better” often leads to hyperfocus or getting lost, not consistent progress.
  • “Just do a little every day” often fails because ADHD brains struggle with inconsistent timing and habits.
  • Most traditional advice doesn’t consider ADHD’s unique challenges like working memory or time blindness.

What are the core systems and routines you teach entrepreneurs with ADHD?
  • Focus, balance, and growth are the three pillars she teaches.
  • ADHD challenges include low dopamine (motivation), weak working memory, and time blindness.
  • The goal is to focus on the entrepreneur, their team, and key revenue drivers, while making systems feel natural and easy.

Can you break down the Focus, Balance, Growth framework into actionable steps?Focus:
  • Brain dump everything in your head onto paper.
  • Identify truly urgent tasks (usually no more than 5) and truly important tasks that move the needle.
  • Daily clarity practice: review and prioritize tasks each morning.
Balance (Dopamine):
  • Recognize why you avoid tasks: they’re too boring, too confusing, or too emotionally vulnerable.
  • Use her Step Into Focus routine:
    • Reward yourself before starting (use sensory rewards like a cold drink, music, etc.).
    • Remove distractions and write down exact next steps.
    • Open the application or get into the environment for the task—lower resistance.
Growth:
  • Chunk similar tasks to avoid constant transitions.
  • Schedule deep work during your natural high-energy times.
  • Avoid overly complex calendars; focus daily on the key habit that drives your business forward.

What time management strategies actually work for entrepreneurs with ADHD?
  • Chunk tasks into blocks of similar activities.
  • Schedule high-focus tasks during your personal peak energy periods.
  • Keep the calendar simple and build in consistent time for the highest-impact habit.

How does ADHD impact team leadership, and how can entrepreneurs manage it?
  • ADHD leaders often vacillate between neglect and micromanagement.
  • Working memory struggles mean it’s easy to forget what’s been delegated or follow-up tasks.
  • Communication and follow-up systems are essential.
  • Build a visual business model (e.g., in Miro) to map responsibilities and SOPs clearly.

What are the warning signs of burnout for neurodivergent entrepreneurs, and how can they course correct?
  • Cynicism, overwhelm, and loss of excitement are classic signs.
  • If every day feels like pushing through a wall and you’re increasingly exhausted, you’re likely burning out.
  • Instead of pushing harder, build systems that make the work feel easier and more aligned with how your brain works.

What does the world get wrong about ADHD?
  • ADHD is often viewed as just a weakness, but it’s really a different operating system with unique strengths and weaknesses.
  • Creativity, problem-solving, and crisis management are often ADHD superpowers.
  • Instead of asking the individual to change, adjust the systems around them.

Best Quote

  • If you’re struggling, don’t try to change yourself first — change your system. That’s where the real transformation begins.

Misfit Entrepreneurs!

I want to tell you about an incredible resource that will have tremendous impact on your business and your revenue.  I have used this solution in multiple businesses and it has made an incredible difference!  Let me start by asking you something.  “Do you know how much it costs your business when just one salesperson doesn’t step up to deliver?  Do you really know?”   The cost can easily exceed six figures for just one bad hire – not just from the time, effort, and resources in hiring, but from the lost business and downtime as well.  And the last thing any growing business can afford is to have a failed hire, especially in sales, the revenue driver for the company.

But, what if there was a way to know someone checked all the boxes of a great sales hunter and closer before you ever hired them?  That’s the solution I’ve found from a company called SalesDrive.  They have created a solution called DriveTest®. A powerful hiring tool that separates high-performance salespeople from pretenders by measuring the most critical personality trait needed for success in sales: Drive.

Drive is composed of three non-teachable traits shared by all top producers: Need for Achievement, Competitiveness, and Optimism.  And knowing who has Drive before the interview dramatically increases your chances of selecting salespeople who will produce for you, while avoiding those costly bad hires.  I’ve used the solution and it works.  In fact, it works so well, I have referred them to every company I work with.

And they created a special offer so you can use them as well, for FREE.  You can Get a free DriveTest® assessment today at www.MisfitEntrepreneur/SalesDrive
