Misfit Entrepreneur 15: Kelly Roach

Dave Lukas Chats with Kayla Logue

411:  From $900 to Millionaire: Kayla Logue's Story of Radical Responsibility and Creating Success

This week’s Misfit Entrepreneur is Kayla Logue.  Kayla went from divorced with $900 to her name at 25 to millionaire in just a few years.  How did she do it?  By taking radical responsibility for herself and owning her life.  She found a niche in the real estate space joining a business selling land.  From there, she built out the business to where she was top producer in 4 states.

Her new book is called, “Always Squeezing Lemons:  Taking Responsibility to Define Your Own Success.  The book is a guide to help readers define real success, what it means to them, and how to get it.

One thing I have always taken to heart and something that is consistent among the most successful entrepreneurs we have on this show is taking full responsibility for themselves, their lives, businesses, actions, and so on.  I’m excited for Kayla to share her journey of how she took responsibility and created the life she’d always want and how you can too.

Show Notes

Kayla was divorced at 25 with only $900 to her name—she knew she had to take responsibility for herself and her life embarked on a self-discovery journey during 2020. Realizing she was living a life that didn't align with her true desires, Kayla took radical responsibility for her situation. Through introspection and journaling, she clarified her goals, shed outside expectations, and rebuilt her life from scratch. She found her niche in real estate despite lacking prior experience, and quickly thrived by leveraging her innate strengths in communication and networking. Within a few short years, she was a millionaire and author of "Always Squeezing Lemons," a guide to defining and achieving true success.

Why did you name the book Always Squeezing Lemons?
  • The title reflects the ongoing nature of life’s challenges. Life will always throw lemons (challenges) your way, and it's about continuously dealing with them and turning them into opportunities.
  • The concept of always squeezing lemons is about taking responsibility for your life and consistently showing up to face and overcome challenges.

How should someone go about answering those key questions of like, who am I? What do I want? What do I want to become?
  • Kayla talks about the transformative power of journaling. She initially resisted the idea but found it life-changing once she began writing down her thoughts and goals. This practice helped her process emotions and clarify her desires.
  • It's essential to ask yourself hard questions and be brutally honest. This might involve overcoming societal expectations and personal fears to truly understand what you want out of life.

How do people overcome the fear or the inertia of dealing with internal challenges?
  • Surrounding yourself with supportive individuals or mentors can provide the encouragement needed to face fears and overcome internal challenges.
  • For Kayla, running and physical activities help process emotions. She also founded a nonprofit, Move Into Words, to create a supportive community focused on growth and overcoming personal obstacles.

What are some key lessons from your book that you can share with us (Lemon Drops)?
  • Lemon Drop Examples:
    • Trauma: "Your trauma is your trauma. Do not compare your problems to anyone else's. You're responsible for your trauma only. Exercise discipline, and self-forgiveness is key. Resentment is lethal. Do not hold a self-grudge for actions that don't make you proud. Learn from them and move on."
    • Boundaries: "Giving too much of yourself will put you in a position to lose yourself. Saying no can be hard, but if it is protecting you, the hurt that follows saying yes will be harder."
    • Positivity: "Prioritize positivity and remove negativity. Your own mental narrative is either your strongest asset or your Achilles heel."

How did you get into the real estate business and become a top producer in four states?
  • Kayla discussed how her success has happened in part because of her focus on learning to communicate effectively, build trust, and form genuine relationships. She personalizes communication and focuses on making strong first impressions.
  •  Initially, she faced resistance from colleagues but learned the business through self-education and persistence. Her focus on understanding client needs and remaining nimble, adapting to different situations helped her excel.

What are some other habits that have contributed to your success?
  • Beyond working out, Kayla prioritizes sleep, nutrition, and mental health practices like journaling. She also incorporates walking and listening to podcasts into her routine.
  • She seeks out mentors and surrounds herself with growth-minded individuals to help her development. She values constructive feedback and continuously strives to improve.
  • Recently, Kayla has added cold plunges to her routine, finding them beneficial for mental clarity and physical health.

Misfit Entrepreneurs, as we build our businesses and work every day to make a difference in the world, we must not lose sight of setting ourselves and our families up for continued prosperity, both while working and when we choose to retire.  But how do we do it?

Did you know that studies show the average American will outlive their savings and 401k by 10 years or more?  The financial gurus urge you to “max out your contributions” to government-controlled 401(k)s or IRAs but even the man who invented the 401(k) says it’s a failed experiment that should be destroyed!

Wall Street tells you to defer paying your taxes by saving in a 401(k) or IRA, because you're going to retire in a lower tax bracket.   But if that were true, why are so many retirees who followed that advice finding themselves in the highest tax bracket of their lives?
