Misfit Entrepreneur 15: Kelly Roach

Dave Lukas Chats with Charles Byrd

454:  Mastering Joint Ventures, Charles Byrd’s Blueprint for Streamlining and Growing Your Business Fast

This week’s Misfit Entrepreneur is Charles Byrd. If you’ve ever wanted to scale your business without spending a fortune on ads—and do it while building powerful, lasting relationships—Charles is the guy you want to learn from.
Charles started his career in Silicon Valley as a director at a billion-dollar software company, where he earned the nickname “The Chaos Killer” for his ability to simplify and streamline complex projects. But despite his success, he felt the pull to do something more impactful—and live life on his own terms.

So he walked away and launched his own productivity course. The twist? He didn’t just build a course—he built a system for marketing and scaling it through joint ventures. In fact, Charles became so effective at booking JV promotions—2 to 6 per week consistently—that entrepreneurs and companies began hiring him to teach them his signature approach.

Today, Charles is one of the most sought-after experts on joint venture partnerships and referral marketing, helping business owners grow faster, create leveraged income, and build rock-solid systems to scale.

Show Notes

Charles' journey began in Silicon Valley, where he spent over a decade working his way up to become Director of IT at a billion-dollar software company. Despite the prestige and success, he felt a pull to create a greater impact. With his background in systems thinking, project management, and an instinct for solving chaos, he transitioned out of corporate life and into entrepreneurship. Initially launching a productivity course, Charles found his real breakthrough through Joint Ventures. He cracked the code on consistently booking 2–6 JV promotions per week, allowing him to scale with speed and precision. Now dubbed “The Chaos Killer,” Charles trains entrepreneurs to build leveraged growth using systems and relationships, proving that escaping the traditional path can lead to greater success and freedom.

How do you define systems and why are they critical for entrepreneurs?
  • Systems are about predictability, scalability, and freedom.
  • They allow entrepreneurs to automate their operations, reduce cognitive overload, and focus on high-impact work.
  • Without systems, you're constantly reacting; with them, you're proactive and intentional.
  • A strong system allows even creative and visionary entrepreneurs to leverage their talents without getting bogged down in details.

You’ve become known for mastering Joint Ventures. What’s the strategy behind consistently booking 2-6 JV partnerships per week?
  • Charles uses a replicable outreach and tracking process to manage JV relationships.
  • He employs a "frictionless yes" strategy: making it easy for others to say yes by showing how they benefit.
  • He follows a pipeline-based approach: Identifying, nurturing, and following up consistently.
  • He focuses on alignment and value exchange, not cold pitching.
  • Success comes from organizing the chaos behind relationship-building into a reliable system.

You talk about being the ‘Chaos Killer.’ What are the biggest sources of chaos in entrepreneurs’ lives?
  • Context switching – bouncing between tasks kills momentum and creates overwhelm.
  • Lack of prioritization – working on too many things without a clear path.
  • Not having systems to offload decision fatigue.
  • Trying to do everything yourself without delegation or automation.

How do you help entrepreneurs go from reactive to proactive?
  • Start with clarity: Know what matters and eliminate the rest.
  • Build habits and processes that support focus and momentum.
  • Create a “capture and organize” structure for ideas and tasks.
  • Use templates, checklists, and automation to remove repeated decision-making.

What’s the biggest mistake people make with Joint Ventures?
  • Not following up – relationships fall apart without nurturing.
  • Trying to pitch too early without providing value first.
  • Not being clear on their offer and audience, making it hard for partners to understand what they’re promoting.
  • Not treating JV outreach like a pipeline — they treat it like luck.

How can people best identify the right partners for their business?
  • Look for people who serve the same audience but in a different way.
  • Seek values alignment — shared integrity matters more than reach.
  • Tap into your existing network before reaching out cold.
  • Use CRM tools or spreadsheets to track and manage outreach.

You also talk about living a life by design. What does that mean to you?
  • It means choosing where, when, and how you work.
  • Being intentional about energy management, not just time.
  • Having freedom to travel, be with family, and pursue passion — not just grind for success.
  • Designing systems around your ideal lifestyle, not vice versa.

What are your non-negotiable habits for high performance?
  • Morning routine to set intention.
  • Physical movement — he mentioned his treadmill desk.
  • Regular review of goals and systems to stay aligned.
  • Guarding his time from distractions and time-wasters.

What’s one tactical takeaway listeners can use right now?
  • Use a simple spreadsheet to start tracking JV contacts and follow-ups — consistency beats brilliance.
  • Create template outreach messages to save time.
  • Schedule blocks for relationship-building — treat it like prospecting.

Misfit Entrepreneurs!

I want to tell you about an incredible resource that will have tremendous impact on your business and your revenue.  I have used this solution in multiple businesses and it has made an incredible difference!  Let me start by asking you something.  “Do you know how much it costs your business when just one salesperson doesn’t step up to deliver?  Do you really know?”   The cost can easily exceed six figures for just one bad hire – not just from the time, effort, and resources in hiring, but from the lost business and downtime as well.  And the last thing any growing business can afford is to have a failed hire, especially in sales, the revenue driver for the company.

But, what if there was a way to know someone checked all the boxes of a great sales hunter and closer before you ever hired them?  That’s the solution I’ve found from a company called SalesDrive.  They have created a solution called DriveTest®. A powerful hiring tool that separates high-performance salespeople from pretenders by measuring the most critical personality trait needed for success in sales: Drive.

Drive is composed of three non-teachable traits shared by all top producers: Need for Achievement, Competitiveness, and Optimism.  And knowing who has Drive before the interview dramatically increases your chances of selecting salespeople who will produce for you, while avoiding those costly bad hires.  I’ve used the solution and it works.  In fact, it works so well, I have referred them to every company I work with.

And they created a special offer so you can use them as well, for FREE.  You can Get a free DriveTest® assessment today at www.MisfitEntrepreneur/SalesDrive
